The six Title Fighters had a mixed start to the opening day of the penultimate round of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship at Silverstone, here they reflect on the opening two sessions.

Shakey down but definitely not out
Shane 'Shakey' Byrne completed just one lap of the circuit this afternoon as the double champion crashed out on his first flying lap at Chapel. A high-side left the second placed Title Fighter sidelined from the remainder of the session with heavy crash damage to his Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki but he only suffered a bang to his left hand and is ready to come back strong tomorrow.

Byrne said: "It was a weird crash to be honest as I had done a steady out lap and was only building up; it wasn't like I was riding on the edge at all as when you are on the limit you normally know about it! I went through the fast section, tipped into Maggotts and that was fine, Becketts was fine and then I didn't even make the apex at Chapel before it flicked me up and I came back down on the bike and skated along for a bit at a fair rate of knots before I bailed. I banged my hand but it wasn't anything serious; I was just happy to have not come down on my shoulder. It took me until Saturday last year to get going so it isn't a major drama!"

Lowes leapfrogs rivals
WFR Honda's Alex Lowes set the pace in both sessions and is determined to build on his double Assen podium as he targets a maiden MCE BSB race.

Lowes said: "We've changed the bike drastically from Assen to try and make the softer compound tyres work better for me. I think we need that for the races to win as the other top teams are using them. I'm quite happy with the way things are going, though we still have plenty of work to do before Sunday. I feel confident that we will be challenging again for the podium like we did at Assen."

Brookes bids to overcome chatter
Josh Brookes was third fastest and the championship leader admits that in order to up their pace tomorrow for qualifying he needs to overcome some chatter issues he was experiencing with the Tyco Suzuki. The Australian was expecting the problem following last year's round and is working on a plan with his team to reduce the issue.

Brookes said: "We used the SC2 in the first session and we had a lot of chatter and that was a bit of a concern, because a certain amount I can ride around but it seemed to be consistent. We switched to the SC1 with ten minutes to go and we still had some so we need to come up with something tomorrow but to be honest I had expected it going from last year. We will have a think about it with the boys tonight and hopefully we can reduce it ready for qualifying."

Defending champion building momentum
Tommy Hill believes that despite having not tested at Silverstone the Swan Yamaha team are already in the ballpark ahead of tomorrow's qualifying. Hill believes the team have been building momentum and will be ready to strike when it counts tomorrow.

Hill said: "I had to get out on track this morning just to familiarise myself with the circuit again and get some laps under our belt. I was hoping for a dry session this afternoon and we were lucky but some of the other riders have already tested here so we knew it would be a bit of cat and mouse. It would have been nice to be quickest today but I am happy with the top five as I know we are not a million miles away and we are building momentum. We want to carry that on tomorrow, up our game again and be ready for qualifying."

Laverty bidding to improve tyre wear
Michael Laverty and the Samsung Honda team have continued their work on tyre choice as he ended the day sixth fastest. The team have been working to improve longevity in order to be in a stronger position at the end of the race.

Laverty said: "We are still working hard trying to make the softer compound tyre last, we've just done eight laps and it is worn. We used the soft option and hope we can make it last though the race but we may have to switch to the hard compound and if we did that we would need to get more pace out of it. We have this problem on the high speed abrasive tracks - first Thruxton and Oulton Park, then Assen and here, but we are working hard on it and need to make a decision as to which way we go ahead of the races."

Bridewell upbeat despite issues
Tommy Bridewell suffered a technical problem this afternoon that hampered any consistent lap times but the Supersonic BMW team have now solved the issue and he believes they will be in a strong position for qualifying tomorrow.

Bridewell said: "We had technical problems this afternoon which was disappointing for everyone in the team as it forced us out. I did two laps in a row and it felt good to be honest. I think that now we know what the issue is and we have solved it that we are not a million miles away."
