Hallo,

i just finished the MAICO MD 250. A bit different to my TZ and Rotax 256.
Frits helped me with the scavanging angles, the combustion chamber layout and the ignition timing.
Thank you for your great advices Piston damage 771973
The most important thing: Frit's consulting was very good. The engine has more power than the clutch can take. I have to increase the spring power.
But while trying different carburettor jettings the engine suddenly blocked. Piston seizure...
The engine was warm but not hot, throttle ca. 3/4 open, 7000rpm. Mixure 1:25 ELF 909 with 100% AVGAS.
Spark plug was brown, normal, piston top wet with oil.
The cylinder size is 76,00mm Piston 75,94mm. It is a "Wahl" piston, forged.
What do you think is the reason for that seizure? Is 0,06mm play too less? Could the piston material be a wrong type?
The engine was not in stress, just a normal test ride. No campare with a race.
Except that the engine ran with only little vibration, ouput power ect. very well.

I´m looking forward for your suggestions.
Best regards,

Bernd

I'm glad that you found the power you were looking for, Bernd.
Throttle 3/4 open can be dangerous: even when the main jet is large enough, the needle jet can cause a lean mixture.
And why use AvGas? It's costly, its energy density is modest, it's slow-burning and it brings more heat into the engine than regular E98 fuel.

0,06 mm clearance for a 76 mm diameter piston is a minimum; 0,07 mm would be safer. And of course the piston material could be the wrong type, but without more detailed information that remains just a guess.

However, the pictures of the seized piston make me suspect something else: its conicity. Those 0,06 or 0,07 mm clearance is measured at the biggest diameter of the piston. But higher up, were the piston gets hotter, you'll need more clearance, which means that you will need a barrel-shaped or conical piston. How much conicity? That is a matter of experience, which you are gathering right now. But do not be afraid to go beyond 0,2 mm top diameter clearance.

I can only agree with Frits. I suppose your cylinder is with an iron sleeve and not any kind of plating. This combined with a forged piston (my experience is that for some reason it has a tad more dilatation than cast pistons) makes that you need to be on the safe side with your clearance.

It should be sure that it is a cast shirt, the photos may indicate the opposite  Piston damage 55116

On the other hand, it's  a air cooled cylinder, so warmer.
0.06 clearance, for a 76 mm diameter, it seems to me, too little.
For a forged piston and a cast iron sleave, I would gladly put 0.09 to 0.1 mm.
A little less for a Nikasil coating.

The arrangement of the seizing marks seems to indicate a lack of clearance, especially at the head.
It's clear that doing mid-opening tests, does not help.
It is enough that the needle is badly adapted to the tube, and it is the catastrophe.

Interesting bike . AS far as I know there was the Maico MD 250 and the MD 250 WK.

Is your Maico a road bike or a racing bike ?

Another detail I wonder about that bike is how did the admission works ?

Hi,

@ Frits: the conicity is about 0,2mm. I have to measere that exactely tomorrow. Too much work today. Thanks for your thoughts!
I use AVGAS in all my engines, normally 1/3 to 2/3 100 Octane fuel. It´s easy to get for me, all other drivers use it, so it´s easy to compare jetting ect.
And I´m used to the jetting with it. It makes a good spark plug face. But E98 it´s an interesting thing to test next time on the Dyno. What do you think are the advantages?

The cylinder is nicasil coated, original it was chrome.

@ F. Payart: The piston is a forged one. I know that a mid range test is not very usefull. But due to an heavy accident I´m not abled to drive the bike myself at the moment. So i don´t have a direct opportinity to react properly on the bike.

At the moment a needle jet DQ268 is fitted. I will get a little more rich.

@ Apriliabarth:

It´s my father's bike. I built it up this year from zero. He was always into these bikes. It´s a pure racing machine.

Tomorrow i will meet the manufaturer of the piston. He´s the opinion he can tell me the reason of the seazure within 5 minutes.
I`m curious for that conversation. It´s not my intention to blame him, I just want a solution for this problem for the future.

Best regards,

Bernd

Très intéressant ce problème de conicité. Je pense que c’est à surveiller quant on adapte des pistons de moteurs à refroidissement liquide dans des cylindres à air, sans doute aussi en 4 temps.

Hallo,

I visited Helmut Wahl on friday. He is the senior and in his late 70s. A nice man, easy to talk with.
He looked on the piston and guessed it was a problem with the cylinder coating. But he was not really sure. It´s a strange kind of damage he said.
It was a Powerseal coating. Powerseal coated all my cylinders for Rotax 256 and TZ 350 since several years without any problems.

He honed off the damaged coating parts, milled off 1/10mm on the top of the skirt.(botton is still 75,94mm) and lathed some oil grooves into the piston.
And he recommened a coater in Ditzingen near Stuttgart. This should work together.
He did not blame any lubrication, ignition ect. He just said that he would assemble the top end bearing with a needle cage with smaller needles. I will do so.

Due to this i have no choise. The cylinder will be recoated and i try to run the engine with the modified piston. When it`s OK i take a new piston with the actual measerments. When not we will meet again.

What do you think about it?

Best regards,

Bernd

PS: My assumption: As the cylinder gets hot the material of the "wall" above the exhaust is pushing into the cylinder. When the piston is fitted with too less play it seizes. A good friend of mine got these problems with own casted TZ 350 7 port cylinders. I got these cylinders too but reversed the water flow direction and fitted a very large radiator. He took away some material of the seized parts of the piston and it worked.

Hallo,

the cylinder is now back from coating and i made a new test drive.
This time the engine survived but still got good power.
I changed: Piston diameter was decreased at the level of the ring, fitted a small end bearing with 4-6/1000mm more play,
ended the ignition curve on a 20° straight instead of curvature to 9° to get the heat out at high revs (due to a 76mm bore),
fitted a DQ 270 instead of the 268 (with K52)
The engine did about 70km the first 40-50 with a rich mix. When I´m sure the engine will stand i can get leaner and pull the plug to a more agressive ignition timing.

No edges can be felt on the cylinder but i have little concern about the "polished" areas above the outlet port.
I never had problems like this with my watercooled engines.
What do you think? Should i hone the cylinder again now, as it´s run in?

That is very tight. I consider a ring gap of 0,5 % of the bore as a minimum for safety. And you need to make sure that the ring groove is deep enough radially. The ring must be able to lie a little (0,05 mm is enough) below the local piston surface.

Hallo Frits,

today i measeured the ring gap accurately to 0,28mm. I will file a bit on each side of the gap to get to 0,38mm, what you see as a minimum.
And the groove is deep enought, the ring can disappear in the piston.
Thank you again for your knowledge. One can ask whatever for, you have a profund answer for sure!  Your day seems to have more that 24 hours.  Piston damage 241515

If i understood frits "zündungs manual" Piston damage 241515 Ignition advance should be lowerd for a cooler running of the cylinder!

Think 20 degree is to much. ..that will produce a stay of more heat in the cylinder and cool down exhaust gas...

13- 15 degree at maximum revs would be better frits? Wink
