Manx rider Conor Cummins is torn between two top offers to ride Honda and Yamaha machinery on the roads in 2013.

News Letter Sport can reveal that the ‘Ramsey Rocket’ is in talks with Robin Croft’s SMT Honda team and Shaun Muir’s British championship Milwaukee Yamaha outfit after a year on the Tyco Suzuki machines.

Ulsterman William Dunlop has already signed on the dotted line for Muir, who is looking for a second rider to join his roads line-up after Ian Hutchinson was sidelined for next season as he continues to battle back to full fitness following the latest surgery on his injured left leg.

However, Croft - who saw Michael Rutter claim a record eighth victory on his SMT Honda Fireblade at last month’s Macau Grand Prix - isn’t giving up hope of luring Cummins to his team to contest the North West 200, Isle of Man TT, Southern 100, Ulster Grand Prix and Macau meetings next year.

Team boss Croft - who also ran TT king John McGuinness on a Honda at Macau - told the News Letter he was keeping his fingers crossed that Cummins would agree to spearhead his roads effort next year in a one-man team built solely around the 26-year-old.

“The aim is to do the five road race meetings next year - North West 200, TT, Southern 100, Ulster Grand Prix and Macau - I don’t have the budget to do the British Superbike Championship,” said Croft.

“The aim is to pull together the rider and the budget. I’m talking to one or two riders and one of those is a certain Manxman, but the problem is there’s a certain team owner from Guisborough chasing the same man!

“All I can say is that Conor asked the advice of Michael Rutter and John McGuinness at Macau and the advice he is getting is to come and ride a Honda.

“We’ve got a Superbike and a Superstock sorted and I’m going to build a World Supersport version of the 600cc Honda for him should he commit to us.

“Everything Conor would have would be good enough to do the job and the infrastructure is all in place. I’m offering Conor my full team, all the mechanics and the lorry - the team would be built around Conor for 2013 and it would be his team,” added Croft.

“I’m a massive fan of road racing and of the TT in particular and I’d love to get Conor on board.

“He knows what I’m offering and I’m just waiting on a phone call.”

Rutter, who joins McGuinness and Michael Dunlop in the Honda TT Legends team for 2013, is also in line to ride for SMT Honda in the Superstock class at the North West and Isle of Man TT.

Meanwhile, Lincolnshire’s Gary Johnson is considering running his own bikes next year after riding an ex-WFR Honda at Macau, while Kiwi Bruce Anstey is understood to be staying put at Padgetts Honda.

Isle of Man star Conor Cummins has opted to join William Dunlop at Milwaukee Yamaha for 2013 as he bids to put his road racing career back on track.

News Letter Sport understands that Cummins has been swayed by a deal to join Shaun Muir’s British championship outfit, dashing SMT Honda owner Robin Croft’s hopes of securing his signature next year.

The Ramsey rider suffered a setback this year after he was ruled out of the Isle of Man TT races due to a hand injury sustained at the North West 200, when he was taken out by Gary Johnson.

He returned to action for Northern Ireland’s Tyco Suzuki team at the Southern 100 in July, finishing on the rostrum five times before competing at the Armoy road races in preparation for the Ulster Grand Prix at Dundrod.

The 26-year-old was involved in a life-threatening accident during the Senior TT in 2010 when he crashed out at high-speed at the Verandah on the Mountain while challenging for the lead of the race on the McAdoo Kawasaki.

Cummins has faced an uphill struggle to recapture the same form and a pivotal season looms in 2013, when he will ride an array of Yamaha machinery for Muir at the North West 200, Isle of Man TT and Ulster Grand Prix.

He completes the roads line-up for Muir along with Dunlop, who was confirmed in the team in November following his switch from Wilson Craig’s Honda outfit.

SMT Honda boss Croft is now on the lookout for another rider following Cummins’ decision to take the Yamaha route.

However Croft, who ran Michael Rutter and John McGuinness on his Fireblades at last month’s Macau Grand Prix, has few options available, with most of the frontrunners already snapped up for 2013.

Lincolnshire’s Gary Johnson is seemingly the only likely candidate on paper capable of challenging for the results Croft craves at the big international meetings.

The SMT Honda owner told the News Letter: “I want a rider who can challenge at the front and the only one who seems to be left is Gary Johnson, as most of the other lads have been lured by factory teams.

“But Gary seems to want to run his own effort next year and my options seem limited.

“But you never know what might happen in a few weeks and riders are obviously aware that I need someone on my bikes, so we’ll just wait and see what happens over the next few weeks.”

Stroud rider Dan Cooper will remain with the Centurion Racing outfit for 2013 and contest the TT, North West 200 and Ulster Grand Prix.

Cooper followed up his four bronze replicas on his debut in 2011 with a sensational performance at last year's festival as he picked up three bronze and a silver replica. Just for good measure, Dan clinched second in the Privateer's Championship and the prestigious Joe Craig Trophy, awarded to the British rider with the best performance on a British machine.

"I'm really looking forward to the North West 200, TT and Ulster Grand Prix as these are my main priorities for this year so I just can't wait to get started. The team are pushing the boat out for me this year and we are entering six races at the TT which means it's going to be a busy fortnight," said The Ferret.

"They are building me a Superbike so that will be the first time I've raced round there on slicks and hopefully we can lap in excess of 125mph on that. I'm hoping to improve on my top ten in the Supersport race also but the faster you go, the harder it is to find that little extra time.

"I'm hoping I can get a couple of good results at the North West 200 and Ulster Grand Prix also, as I led a race at Dundrod last year, and then later in the year I'll be teaming up with Guy Martin at the Manx Grand Prix so how good is that!?"

[Road Racing] News des pilotes 8605-art
Roads specialist James Hillier will join Steve Heneghan in Quattro Kawasaki's road racing team for 2013.

The Bournemouth racer bagged second place in the first Super Twin race at the TT last year and is a fast-improving prospect on the roads.

"It is great to have James back on board again in 2013. He has a great relationship with his crew chief and the staff in the team and is a real part of the Kawasaki family, I firmly believe James will be challenging for top honours in 2013," said team boss Pete Extance.

"The team also welcomes road regular Steve Heneghan to the team and we look forward to helping Steve improve his times at this year's TT."

Respected Austrian racer Horst Saiger will make his Mountain course debut in June when he competes in the 2013 Isle of Man TT fuelled by Monster Energy.

The hugely experienced Saiger, Swiss National Champion for the past two seasons, will contest the Superbike, Royal London 360º Superstock and Senior TT races on a 1000cc ZX-10R Kawasaki.

Saiger, who will run his own team with support from Kawasaki Switzerland, already has considerable road racing experience having been a regular at the Macau Grand Prix over the last few seasons, including a 5th last year.

In addition, he made a sensational debut at the 2012 North West 200 road races, where he competed in the two Superstock races. Having taken a solid 16th in the first, damp race, he really proved his road racing credentials in the second race on Saturday with a stunning 10th and 117mph+ lap, finishing ahead of star names like Gary Johnson, Adrian Archibald, Ian Lougher and Stefano Bonetti.

From the town of Knittelfeld, Saiger also has vast experience in the Endurance World Championship, having competed in the series for more than a decade for high profile teams including YART and former TT competitors Bolliger Kawasaki.

Almost ever-present in the top eight of the championship, Saiger’s results include second overall in 2010, third in 2009 and fourth in 2004 and 2006, with podiums and numerous top five finishes at the Le Mans 24 Hour, Bol d’Or, 8 Hours of Oschersleben, 8 Hours of Qatar and 8 Hours of Albacete.

Saiger has also competed in the Superbike World Championship and at the Daytona 200.

Saiger said:

“The TT has a very large profile in Austria and Germany and I have already had lots of interest from media and fans in my debut.”

“The Mountain course is one of the world's most famous race circuits and I am looking forward to testing myself on the track.”

Isle of Man TT and Motorsport Manager Paul Phillips added:

“I'm delighted that we have secured the signature of Horst Saiger for the 2013 TT races.”

“He is a proven international competitor with widespread experience and a great track record. He’s already shown his road racing credentials and will be an exciting addition to the 2013 line up who will, I'm sure attract a lot of interest not only in his homeland but also from TT fans around the world.”

William Dunlop has re-established his old partnership with ex-racer turned team owner Chris Dowd to contest the national road races in 2013 on a 600cc Yamaha R6.

Dunlop penned a deal before Christmas with Shaun Muir’s British championship Milwaukee Yamaha team for the international roads meetings plus the first three rounds of the British Supersport series, with an option to continue in the championship based on his results at Brands Hatch, Thruxton and Oulton Park.

The 27-year-old Ballymoney man will ride Muir’s red and white-liveried Yamaha YZF-R1 Superbike, Superstock and Supersport R6 machines at the North West 200, Isle of Man TT, Southern 100 and Ulster Grand Prix.

However, his handshake with Dowd enables Dunlop to compete in the Supersport class at selected national meetings this year, such as the Cookstown 100, Skerries and Armoy.

His presence on the domestic scene will serve as a much-needed boost as the smaller road races struggle to stay afloat due to rising insurance bills, lack of sponsorship and depleted grids.

Dunlop previously enjoyed a successful association with Dowd’s CD Racing team that earned him his maiden international four-stroke victory at the Ulster GP in the Supersport class in 2009.

“It’s a good set-up for me because it means I can ride Chris’s Yamaha now at the nationals this year,” he told the News Letter.

“I raced for Chris before and we had some good results and I know the bike he has will be really good.

“I’ll probably be out on it at Cookstown but I’ll miss Tandragee because it clashes with a round of the British championship,” he added.

“It means now that I’ll be there to give Michael a bit of a run for his money at some of the wee road races rather than him running away with it.”

Dunlop, a Supersport winner at the North West 200 and Ulster Grand Prix in 2012, may also have the opportunity to ride the Milwaukee Yamaha Superbike at selected national road races this year.

Dublin’s Derek Sheils will also compete for CD Racing in 2013 on a Kawasaki ZX-10R and will make his debut at the TT races in June.

Dunlop is among the guests at the Adelaide Motorcycle Festival in Belfast, which opened yesterday and ends tomorrow at the new King’s Hall Pavilion.

Irish rider Brian McCormack has joined Ryan Farquhar’s KMR Kawasaki team.

McCormack, who rode for Chris Dowd in 2012, will contest the North West 200, Isle of Man TT, Ulster Grand Prix and selected Irish national events on Kawasaki ZX-10R Superbike and Superstock machinery.

The Waterford man, the current Adelaide Masters champion, is expected to make his debut for Farquhar’s team at the Cookstown 100 in April.

Farquhar retired from road racing in August last year following the death of his uncle, Trevor Ferguson, in a crash at the Manx Grand Prix.

He has ploughed his energy into running his own team this year, securing backing from Vauxhall’s Northern Ireland dealers.

New recruit McCormack said: “I’m delighted to be joining Ryan and his team and it’s a tremendous opportunity for me, one I intend to firmly grasp with both hands.

“I know how hard Ryan works and how meticulous he is in his preparation so I’m thrilled to be getting the chance to ride the bikes he’s won so much on.”

McCormack joins young guns Jamie Hamilton, James Cowton and Connor Behan as KMR Kawasaki’s confirmed line-up so far for 2013.

Lee Johnston had been due to ride for Farquhar in the Supertwin class at the North West 200, but the deal was shelved, with Johnston’s team preferring the Fermanagh man to concentrate on riding the Ducati Panigale 1199R.

Jeremy McWilliams and Michael Rutter, who finished on the rostrum on Farquhar’s KMR machines in the Supertwin race at the North West in 2012, are in line to join the team again for the international meeting on the North Coast.
