[Oldies] Jarno Saarinen, la star qui a révolutionné le pilotage... (Part 1)

Ou l'on s'apercoit dans l'article que Jarno ne vivait pas comme les autres stars du Continental Circus...Il etait a l'aube d'acceder a ce statut ...Par exemple a Daytona c'etait la premiere fois qu'il avait un mecano dédié a son service....Auparavant Soili etait multitaches:elle l'aidait a la mecanique,lavait les vetements,ect...Elle n'avait pu l'accompagner pour toute la durée de la Speedweek en Floride pour des raisons financières et elle le reverrait seulement en Italie pour Imola....Cela laisse songeur compte tenu de son niveau....L'impression que certains pilotes Promosports a l'heure actuelle sont mieux lotis...C'est peut etre cette mise en abyme qui fait que quarante ans apres nous sommes toujours autant admiratif de l'homme et de son oeuvre......

In the first part of his career Jarno Saarinen was good in racing on ice (he was Finnish champion in 1965). But he also was on grass, sand and in road racing. His first real road race bike was built with a Six-days type Puch as a base. The bike was built in the Tunturi factory in Turku, Finland.
When I retired from my work in 2001 I decided to build a replica of the bike, of which the original still exists in Finland. I made more than 100 photographs of the bike and many of its details. I built it with the help of several people, like Jarno's eldest brother Jarmo and his wife Cicca. The nice airscoop in the front brake was made by Pertti Salonen, brother of GP-rider Matti Salonen. Pertti also made the scoop for Jarno's original bike. And the fairing was made by Markku Hietamäki, friend of Jarno, who made all the polyester parts for him.
Like the original bike the engine of my replica is a 250cc. Puch two-stroke split single with 2 carburettors. Of which the second one opens when the first one is 3/4 opened.
For this engine no expansion pipes were used, but extreme noisy megaphones.
Jarno raced the original bike in 1966 and 1967. Then Yamaha came into his life....

Fantastic job !   I wanted to post a pic of that bike from a book about Jarno when I suddenly realize that you were the author of that book..

I am waiting for a "bible" book about Puch history and I hope to find other pictures of that bike.

Ha ha, yes, the photo that I put on page 31 of the Saarinen book stimulated me to build this replica. There is a book about "Puch Motorräder 1900 - 1907" in Austria, but I doubt that there will be many racing bikes in it. The Saarinen-bike however is a "one-off" and certainly will not be part of this book or others.

Hi Klaas! Very nice replica...Wonderful! With the two carbs,this is a motorcycle with "post-combustion",in this step,ah!ah!ah.??
A famous pilot in France,Jacques Roca,has its debuts a Puch with megas,very noisy too.When it drove has Montlhery,a long circuit of 9 kms,he said that we could follow the bike during the complete lap ! A nightmare!

Here is another originally cross 250 Puch owned at that time by Robert Moury and lend to Bernard Boyer to compete in 1958 Bol d ' or at Monthléry with Claude Lariviére , Boyer was later involved with French Matra racing cars. After 2 hours , the crankshaft was broken.

Previously Boyer has made a lot of modifications on Puch engines , making his own cylinder with 4 exhausts and a new cylinder head including with adding an oil pump to avoid exhaust piston seizure ; the result was no much gain of performances , but a much reliable and flexible engine.

Je suppose que la statue du coureur a pied c'est l'une des nombreuses de Paavo Nurmi,erigées en Finlande?
Nurmi etait né a Turku,comme Jarno!

Tu as sans doute raison pour Nurmi Pierre, un héros national.

Et l'angelot Westerlund se prénomme Jouni (merci Jean) mais on l'appelait le plus souvent Jone

Hello Pierre! Thank you very much for your compliments about my Saarinen Puch-replica (all the others also for their good words). Yes, this bike is extremely noisy. My colleagues in demoracing hate the bike! In fact this is the perfect bike to win races: try to start in front and nobody dares to pass you!

P.S: Yes Klaas! Your Puch is same the Ducati Moto GP...Few years ago Valentino Rossi says "it produced the same noise as a nightclub when we follow behind"!!

mais il n'y avait aucun journaliste français à Pesaro ce jour puisque tous les articles (MR MJ) de la Presse Française étaient signés "de notre correspondant italien" ... sauf si bubu nous dit le contraire ?
Et Soili était au tout début de la ligne droite qui précède la ligne d'arrivée puisqu'on voit Jarno la "prendre en selle" une fois son tour d'honneur terminé sur la vidéo youtube que j'ai postée.
